Local Matters
The Internet has made it possible for artists of all kinds to get recognition around the world. But whether you’re just starting out, or you been at it a while… don’t make the mistake of doing it all from your studio/apartment/basement/closet.
Unless MTV or twitter anoints you the next big thing… the only people who are gonna give a shit about what you do are the people who have met you face to face.
And then there’s making a living. Assume you’re lucky enough that some kid from Paris or Tokyo thinks your shit is so dope. They want to sell your art. They want you to perform your music. Good luck if you get paid enough to cover your baggage fees. (But if you have a trust fund… travel away!)
But you can’t just make brilliant work for your facebook friend/girlfriend/mistress.
So you’re left with your city. You gotta do the battle of the bands. You gotta hand deliver your projects to anyone in driving distance. And if you can’t work your way up to the person who runs your city… then you gotta BECOME that person. Your city might not be the audience of 6 billion you’re looking for. But your city is your city. Rep it… and the world might just find you.
